bast leaves

Leaf Shaped Bast Ornaments

In the days before autumn winds strip down the last leaves from almost naked trees, most of us wish we could preserve the colourful beauty a little longer. We collect leaves and scatter them right on the tabletop for decoration. But before we know, they dry up.

What about leaves that will survive in a box or drawer, made from bast, not overly realistic ones, but all the more flexible to your decoration needs?

You'll need:

  • 1 piece of paper wrapped wire per leaf you make,
  • a bundle of natural bast.

This is how they are done:

Fold a piece of paper wrapped wire in half and loosely wrap it with natural bast. Wrap both ends of the wire together, along with the trailing bast end. Make sure you cover the wire tips well so they won't scratch surfaces later on. Eventually push the needle back through the wrapping and add another small backstitch. Now you have the basis of a pretty solid stem.

Next we will create the leaf veins - anyway, that's what they look like to me. Take the bast to the leaf tip and push the needle through one wrapped loop. It has to be on the outside of the wire, since the wire is what gives structure to the shape. Then return to the wrapped base, stitch through it and repeat the process three times on either side. Pull the remaining bast through the base and leave it.

What we get is still a very loose structure which is far from orderly. Weaving through the strands will yield a kind of fabric and keep the "veins" nicely side by side. Split a fine thread off a bast strand and pull it up through the base. Add a backstitch and start weaving from one side to the other. Go back and forth 4 or 5 times, secure the thread and eventually pull it back out through the base.

And well, that's it. Just cut off the unruly trailing bast ends. Create 10 or 20 leaves or more - it all depends on the size of your table or wherever you plan to use them. Enjoy!
