Yellow-white flower brooch

Yellow-white Flower Brooch

The sun is getting warmer, nature is in blossoms everywhere. Sidewalk cafés are again brimming with people. It's time to pull out those light and bright summer colours, right? Spice them up with summer accessories like this sunny yellow and white flower brooch and earrings!

Brosche mit Ohrringen

You will need:

  • white felt, 3 mm thick,
  • yellow felt, 1 mm thick (craft felt),
  • white craft foam, 2 mm thick,
  • 1 pin,
  • a little sewing thread as well as embroidery yarn.

Here is how it's done:

Cut out 5 circles of different sizes. The respective diameters are:

  • thick white felt: 7 cm,
  • white craft foam: 6 cm,
  • yellow felt: 3,4 cm,
  • thick white felt: 2,7 cm,
  • yellow felt: 2,4 cm.

Additionally cut 2 mm strips of craft foam using a rotary cutter and a ruler.

The circles need not be precise, a little bit of irregularity translates into more natural charm.

Now we take care of the edges. Clip out triangles of all the circles but the small white one. The triangles will be just as deep as the visible part of the layer, so that their tips will disappear beneath the smaller layer on top of it. The largest felt layer will receive rather short snip-outs, similar as the yellow layers, whereas the triangles in the craft foam circle will be pretty deep.

Punch a hole into the center of the 2 smallest layers. Thread a craft foam strip into a darning needle and push it through the hole from the top down and back up three times. You will end up with 3 loops at the bottom and 2 loops plus 2 ends at the top. The loops at the top will be about 2 cm in length, those at the bottom about 3/4 cm. Use some embroidery yarn to fixate the bottom loops. Thread it through all of the loops and stitch on both sides of the hole. Pull the loops tight from the top, just enough that they won't slip through the hole. Now go back and stitch on every loop individually. This will make the whole thing stable. At last cut the excess length on the top back to about 1 cm.

Place the largest 3 circles on top of each other concentrically and join them with several stitches right in the middle, travelling through all 3 layers. Then take the smaller part, fold back the yellow felt, and join both parts with some hidden stitches through all remaining layers.

Place a pin slightly above the horizontal center and stitch it on at both ends.

That's it! ... Wait a minute, we haven't done the earrings yet.

Earrings

The circles are the same sizes as in the upper parts of the brooch. Also, for the most part they will be crafted just the same. Except that the stitches attaching the bottom yellow felt layer have to be hidden, since the back side will be visible.

Earring with schema of fixating thread

To attach an earwire it's enough to poke through the thick felt layer from the far side, stitch back once or twice picking up the wire, and poke back inside the felt. Cut the thread, and you are done.

Enjoy the sun!
